Elements of Yiruma’s A River Flows In You

Elements of Music Composed and performed by Yiruma.

The piano is the sole instrument of this piece. This monophonic piece’s mood portrays more sadness than happiness, however it is extremely calming. I would play this piece for an elementary school classroom and perhaps ask students to reflect on how it made them feel.

Dynamics

There are base notes accompanying the high melody notes. The notes move by step (conjunct) and have a definite pitch. It is played in the key of A minor, producing a sad feeling.

Melody
  • Starts Piano, gradually turns mezzo piano.
  • Dynamics tie into rhythm in this piece.
  • Ritardando (gradually slower)= Decrescendo
  • Accelerando (gradually faster)= Crescendo

This piece starts out with a long section A that lasts around 2 minutes. It leads stright to the bridge, Section B, which lasts around 30 seconds and then ends with section A again.
